Modeling Healthy Eating Habits for Our Children

Modeling healthy eating habits for our children helps prevent them from becoming junk food addicts and has a greater influence than the mother’s eating habits while pregnant .

It is common knowledge that what we consume, or whether or not we smoke, when are pregnant will have an effect on our baby. So it makes sense that if a pregnant mother consumes a diet rich in junk food, that the baby may be effected by the quality of nutrients. The following study suggests that pregnant mothers who consume junk food actually cause changes in the development of the opioid signaling pathway in the brains of their unborn children. This change results in the babies being less sensitive to opioids, which are released upon consumption of foods that are high in fat and sugar. In turn, these children, born with a higher “tolerance” to junk food need to eat more of it to achieve a “feel good” response. (See  Eating junk food while pregnant may make your child a junk food addict)

While I agree that the consumption of junk food while pregnant is not healthy for mother or child, it seems to me that the eating habits and lifestyle of the family unit after the baby is born has more influence on whether or not a child becomes a junk food addict. In other words, modeling healthy eating habits for our children helps prevent them from becoming junk food addicts and has a greater influence than the mother’s eating habits while pregnant. Learning about nutrition is interesting and fun, and learning to like new foods can be enhanced with the use of hypnosis. Hypnosis is about behavior change, and eating is one behavior we have participated in since the day we were born! Almost all the clients I’ve worked with in regard to weight loss have had an addiction to one or more categories of junk food. Hypnosis is a very effective way to eliminate the cravings for junk food, thus eliminating the addiction.

I’d like to believe that it’s never too late to learn about nutrition, and model that behavior for our children and grandchildren. If you feel that you are addicted to sweets, or chips, or anything that is not good for you, hypnosis can help.

Fruits and Veggies Good for Emotional Health

When it comes to feeding our families, it is easy to become overwhelmed with so much focus on gluten-free foods, food allergies, organic food choices, etc. Separating the chaff from the wheat (pun intended) can be quite a challenge. What a relief to know that sticking to a healthy, clean, and green regimen is still supported by scientific research as noted in Many apples a day keep the blues at bay.

As this report shows, there is a strong day-to-day relationship between more positive mood and higher fruit and vegetable consumption, but not other foods. That makes it easy to shop for your family, easy to plan meals, and easy to cook! In the early days of processed foods, they were seen as a convenience. Now that we understand the harmful effects of eating a diet heavy in processed foods, they don’t seem so convenient anymore.  Thank goodness for natural foods! After all, what could be more convenient than fresh fruits and vegetables?

However, some people don’t like fruits and vegetables. In the past four years, I have had the pleasure of working with more than a few clients whose desired behavior change was to learn to like fruits and vegetables. As adults we usually eat and enjoy more foods than we did as children, but that early childhood programing can often keep us from enjoying a wide variety of foods. Hypnosis can help by re-programming your mind, and your taste buds!

As parents, and grandparents, it’s important to remember to feed our children fresh fruits and veggies at a young age,  allowing them to develop a taste for what is healthy. Be a good role model for your children. Keep a fresh supply of fruits and vegetables on hand at all times, and eat them yourself. Children imitate what they learn at home. Eat fresh, clean, and green!

Emotional vs Physical Hunger

With the holidays and the New Year drawing near, I want to spend some time talking about weight loss. It is one of the most common reasons people seek help from a hypnotherapist, and one of the many behavior changes possible with the use of hypnosis.

The majority of my weight loss clients are able to achieve success after 3 to 4 sessions. On occasion, more or less sessions are required. One of the most important conversations I have with clients has to do with the exploration of why they eat. There is a big difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger. » Read the rest of this entry «
